A 15-year old Pattharadanai ‘Ooad’ Kampong went missing on the evening of July 26, 2009. The boy from Pijiit Province went swimming with friends in Karon Beach. According to his friends, he went into the water but did not return. He was last seen waving for help in heavy surf around 6pm last Sunday. He is believed to have been caught in the undertow and may have drowned.
During that time, lifesavers saw him in trouble and tried to save him but were unable to fight through the strong undertow in the dark. Chalong police later sent out a rescue team to search for him but was unable to find the boy.
The young man has been in Phuket for only ten days to help his father with construction work at a Hard Rock Café project in Patong. He had gone with a group of friends to the beach after finishing work for the day. He said earlier that he was feeling sick and would wait in the truck while the others went swimming. Later, however, he got out of the truck to swim on his own.
“We tried to swim out to where he was, but it was getting too dark. The undertow was very strong, and we couldn’t get to him,” said Jirawut Veerakarn, one of the lifesavers on duty. “We did everything we possibly could, but we were unable to save him.”
The boy’s father worked with the Phuket Ruamjai Foundation, who called on a local clairvoyant to help with the search.
“The clairvoyant conducted a ceremony at the beach on Monday morning and told us that the body was still trapped under the waves at the time but would be washed ashore at four o’clock and found within a kilometer of the spot where he drowned,” he said.
The boy’s body was discovered at 4am, less than one kilometer form the spot where the boy was seen.
