With over $200,000 worth of cash and jewelry scammed out of elderly women in Toronto, Canada, the police are out searching for three Asian women aged between 30 and 60. They are said to have been claiming that they are psychics and that they can bless valuables and money.
In two separate occasions, the psychic scammers have already taken about $100,000 each from two different women.
Based on the account of the two victims who are both elderly people, the scammers approached them while they were at the Dundas St.- University Ave. area. Speaking in their native Cantonese language, they managed to convince the women that their companion, the third in the trio, was a psychic and had sensed that harm was coming upon their families.
To avoid the harm and protect their families, the psychic scammers told the women to bring in cash and jewelries and place them in a bag. They told them further to meet them in a street corner to have the bag blessed. When they did, a slight trade of hand was used and the bag returned to the women was a different one and the valuables were no longer there.
The scammers were able to get away with the crime as they told the women to not open the bag until they got home.
“The one issue is they were all speaking the same language. They gained [the victims’] trust and they were convincing, and the victims believed their story and turned over their valuables,”
said Tony Vella, spokesman of Toronto Police.
