Russian shamans have been invited to take part in the election to choose the country’s strongest spirit medium. Shamans have been invited by Shamanstvo magazine to take part in the elections. It includes all names in the Shamans Register of Russia. Those that are not in the list may also be included by sending in their names and shamanic status by email. So far, 188 people are included in the poll.
The voting is expected to take place online and the campaign will run for six months. There will be two rounds of voting, each lasting 3 months to give ample time to those in the farther regions to cast their votes. The first round will filter 12 leaders from the list. From them, the Chief Shaman of Russia will be chosen. The next two vote toppers will also be announced.
Candidates have varied specializations including those who are wheter conjurers, rag-doll makers and spirit riders. Shamanism is widely practiced in several Russian regions. In the Tyva republic, it is even accepted as an official religion. There is an estimated 500 active shamans in the country.
