The Traditional and Alternative Treatments for Migraines

Migraines and ordinary headaches are among the most common discomforts that any person will complain about. In answer, over-the-counter prescription drugs are given to alleviate the pain. These include aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen. The most popular examples of these medicines are Tylenol, Motrin, and Advil.

There are also three other medications that have had limited success in the treatment of migraines. These are ergotamine, tartrate, and sumatripan. The third one is extra-strength Excedrin which includes caffeine in its content. Caffeine is believed to relieve both tension headaches and migraines.

There have been homeopathic treatments recommended for reducing or, if possible, eliminating migraines. However, there has been no certainty in the ability of such methods to treat such discomfort. Among these alternatives are acupuncture or acupressure therapy, biofeedback therapy, chiropractic therapy, and the water-based hydrotherapy treatment.

Herbs are also seen to help ease migraines like chamomile, feverfew, valerian, white willow, and skullcap.

Extra magnesium added to one’s diet can also be an alternative. Massage and regular physical exercise cannot also be underestimated as natural cures for migraine. One can also get rid of migraines by trying relaxation methods like meditation and yoga.

There is also another treatment to migraine that uses electricity. The Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation sends a very mild shock of electricity that is supposed to prevent one’s body from receiving signals of pain caused by migraine.

Having migraine is not an easy thing. The excruciating pain can hinder anyone from effectively carrying out his work. Of the many cures to migraine that have been mentioned, it is always better to resort to the more natural methods as these do not pose any harm on the person’s body. It is up to the person to take his pick.
