Will County in Chicago, Illinois has recently approved a zoning ordinance for new age businesses. Last week, the County Board went over its long list of outdated ordinances, where the approval was granted on placing zoning restrictions for fortunetellers.
As such, psychics seeking payment for their services have to open shop in the commercial district. The new ordinance takes effect immediately in the unincorporated parts of the country. It will not affect some new age services located in Bolingbrook, Joliet, Lockport, Naperville, Peotone and Tinley Park.
The zoning change will only affect customer traffic, but does not address websites and psychic phone lines. According to the ordinance, activities that are affecting include: “Foretelling the future in exchange for financial or other valuable consideration.” The services listed in the ordinance are: “astrology, augury, card or tea reading, cartomancy, clairvoyance, clairaudience, crystal gazing, divination, magic mediumship, necromancy, palmistry, psychometry, phrenology, prophecy, spiritual reading, chakra reading, or any similar means.”
The recent ordinance ratification came after several people inquired about opening such businesses, said Will County Land Use Department supervisor David Dubois. Psychics and people dealing with the occult have gained both popularity and respect in Will County over the last few years. The sherrif’s police even accepted psychics’ help in resolving some of their missing persons cases.
