If you find yourself spending more time hiding your communications from your spouse, and sharing your feelings and dreams with someone else you have found yourself in an emotional affair.

When your emotional affair comes out, your partner will struggle with painful and mixed emotions that can include the sense of him or her being betrayed and lied to, and that they have been deceived by you, the person they loved and trusted the most. Emotional affairs can be more detrimental than sexual affairs.
