Try him or her out; take him/her to your friend, cousin or sisters, and place the baby or small child in their arms. That should do it. Or, at the very least give you a good indication.

Other than that, you could gently start the conversation about kids and families by talking about your own family or that of a friend and see what he/she says.

Of course you could ask him/her outright, however, depending on how long you've been together you could scare them off. If in doubt, take it gently and ask questions that scout around the topic. Questions like; did you like growing up in a large family, or if he/she didn't you can ask if he would have preferred to be in a large family.
