The Hanged Man – reversed.

Please note, I have interpreted this card as reversed that is why I see the hanged man as standing instead of pendant.

This card shows a young man standing awkwardly on one leg; normally suspended by his foot from a strong wooden branch, the hanged man stands for life-changing events. His hands are behind his back. This signifies how at the same time he feels like a prince and like a ‘pauper’ he adopts a princely pose, but he fears that he lacks the words to express how he feels. He is at the same time a rich lad relishing in the abundance of love that he finds himself somehow miraculously surrounded by, and a poor boy with his hands tied who wishes he understood his feelings, never mind being able to express them. He ‘stands’ between two tree trunks and the space between the trees and him is unencumbered save for one small challenge which is represented by the stub that remains after a crooked branch has been sawn away. This points towards his right hand knee and that makes me wonder if he likes things to be the way they are for long enough that he feels stable. I don’t think he deals well with sudden change. He tries to preserve the status quo.

His head tilts slightly to the side because he feels he is outgrowing the boy he used to be and trying to fit in to this new young man category. He knows that he is being offered an amazing opportunity for learning and growth but he vacillates. Is he making a huge sacrifice if he gives himself in to the selflessness that his new position demands of him? Or is he receiving with joy a gift that will turn his world upside down, make him question all that he believes and yet open a door to self-awareness?

Here is a visualisation to awaken the goddess within whenever you need an answer to a question regarding your pagan philosophy...

Imagine yourself standing on a pebbly beach where the cool azure sea of the Mediterranean meets the tall limestone cliffs that sprawl and stretch above as if in craggy contemplation of their place and their purpose...

Feel the bubbles of the water as they froth about your feet refreshing you, cleansing and anointing you. See how the pebbles are worn smooth by their centuries of tumbling together. Feel their healing massage as you dig your feet into them at the water’s edge.


Imagine that you are raising your eyes in gratitude for all that is above. Reach out your arms and say, “I now open all my harmonious channels to receive the answers to my questions delivered under the grace of the Goddess within me.”

As you finish your invocation you feel the swish of birds’ wings and turning your head to your left you see two blue cranes each holding one end of a swirl of lilac linen fabric draped in the fashion of a hammock and forming a secure seat for your flight to the top of the cliffs.

You step in rather gingerly but are amazed at the strength of what seems at the same time ethereal, light and gauzy.

Your avian chauffeurs land and place you firmly on your feet in front of a marble temple, its columns executed in the elegance of the Ionic order, the frieze a series of pentagrams picked out in gold and its gable a holographic map of the cosmos.

The big old oak doors open as you place your foot on the first step and reach down to make your offering (a silver goblet of nectar, a pink water lily and a tiny silver flute) to the gods and goddesses who frequent this magical place. And then you walk lightly and quickly because you know that you will meet your goddess within.

Through the doors you see one large circular room of graceful proportions, like an old ballet studio with its polished purple floor and brass held wooden bar that circles the walls waist high.

See yourself drawn to the pentagram an inlay of jade, smoky quartz and amber in the centre of the room. You stand in it and turn to face east where the doors are. They have remained open and the sun shines in briefly but brightly before the doors now swing closed. You turn to face north where there is a huge mirror framed in light rolled gold carved in the manner of an art deco trim.

As you look into the mirror you see what you thought was a reflection of yourself take clearer form. The figure steps out of the mirror and you see it is your inner goddess. (You should insert your own picture of what your inner goddess looks like. See * for my impression of her.) She smiles at you and hands you a scroll tied with an emerald green velvet bow.

You thank her and you untie the ribbon:

There in gold and silver ink on the finest parchment is written the answer to your question.

You leave the temple and walk to a door in the cliff which leads to a staircase carved into the rock and which spirals down to the beach.

You return to where you were. You face the ocean and you give thanks for nature and its wisdom of the ages.

You wash your eyes in the crystal water so that your sight is clear and your perception unmuddied by confusion, and then… you read your answer.

My picture of your inner goddess is that she has light brown hair with tendrils that are tipped with tiny green leaves like the new shoots of a camphor Laurel tree.

She wears a gown of moss green silk that is girdled by a cord twisted from russet thread.

Her feet are bare except for a thonged sandal made of the softest butter yellow leather with the wings of Mercury in deep turquoise.

She wears a silver armlet encircling her right upper arm and on it are carved the symbols of her craft: the stars, the moon, the planets, earth, air, fire and water…

I can't even describe how perfect that visualization is for me! Everytime you described something knew, it rang so perfectly with me. The beach meeting with the cliffs. Near Earth is my favorite place to be and (shockingly) water is the least. To visualize myself in an ocean is so perfect. It will help me connect to my inner Water. I've actually been thinking about doing some meditations to connect better with water! How did you know?

I love cranes! I actually spent a lot of time at the zoo today taking pictures of them.

Your description of the temple took my breath away. The stones, the colors, the columns, the offering(!! I love lillies. :wub), everything. It was just perfect.

And those pictures!! How perfect. The tree. The pentagram. <3 And the stones at the end. All my favorites!! The Eye of Horus, the Ahnk, the Goddess, Pentagram, Triquetra, Triple Goddess, the (life-Path) Spiral, and Thor's Hammer. Yep. I knows them all.

You're fantastic. I definitely will not have a hard time with this visualization.

The Hermit…

in this deck L’Ermite is going back to the past to shed light on his present situation and he is also temporarily detaching himself from the apparent burdens of the illusory world in which he finds himself.

I see that you already take a leaf from the Hermit’s book to maintain equilibrium and harmony.

Number Fourteen, The Hermit is holding a lamp to light his way. It speaks to me of illumination. He is in a hurry to get there, to solve his problem at his source.

He is dressed in the robes of a friar – this suggests that he is a man of contemplation and that he uses the messages passed to him in his contemplation to guide his way in the world. His head is uncovered leaving the crown chakra bare and ready to receive the secrets of the Universe at any time.

He is sprightly and eager to journey along his path. There is a sense of efficient haste in the figure, which inclines forward as if it show its readiness to accept the gift of awareness.

The stick (staff) that he holds in his left hand (the emotional, the spiritual, the inner female) is a strong support balanced by the illuminating lamp carried in his right hand (the temporal, the worldly, the inner male). The white light within his lantern is his link to the divine and it is this that urges him to retreat, to regroup and to redress in order to gain the wisdom that is his birthright.

His path is smooth and it carries him fearlessly with a sense of exhilaration towards the unknown which he will meet with joy, for it will furnish him with the knowledge that he must share with those ready to accept who enter his arena.

He is alone on the card signifying his independence and his ability to recognise and heed his inner counsel. This illustrates the need to remind himself that he can be in this world but not of it refusing to allow the petty and the trivial to encroach upon his centredness. The light he carries also reminds him that he is never truly alone – the divine is always close at hand.

"Peace and harmony" has been my mantra of late.

I have, indeed, been navigating my way by the 'seat' of my 'spiritual pants.' I have been in close communication with my Guides for years but never before have I entrusted them with my life the way I do now and they have done very well by me. Very well.

As a result I find myself "checking in," if you will, often and relying on my inner guidance in a manner I never anticipated prior to this stage of my life.

Ah...* smile * magic number 11 and powerful number 6.

LA FORCE and L’AMOUREUX.

Let’s start with The Lovers… I bet you think I am going to talk about romantic love! No, he he he

For you this card speaks of passion certainly, but it is passion attached to some intrinsic part of you that hasn’t yet had full exposure. In the IJJ Swiss Tarot deck cupid points his arrow at the woman (rather than the third figure of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck). It is she who is smitten; and with one golden wing and the other dimmed by his clouds Cupid is sending this message: whatever it is that you are passionate about is at times your greatest gift and at other times your heaviest grievance.

Although there are supportive influences around you, you remain your own harshest critic, berating yourself for knowing that there is this thing you can do and which you know you do well -- something that you know you love doing – and yet it hasn’t quite fallen into place the way it ‘ought to have’.

Luckily in your second card, LA FORCE, you are promised courage and the power to not only endure, but to sail over your perceived obstacles.

Not without a challenge though… sometimes old stuff needs a strong hand to send it on its way. In this deck the card shows a powerful male figure with clenched jaw, grappling with a rather oriental looking lion. The man has set aside his club but it is within reach, and he wrestles the lion bare-handed.

There’s two ways we can interpret this. First of all we could see the lion as that set of noble, yet formidable, rules you set for yourself, and the man with the bronze coloured hair, we could interpret him as representing your desire to achieve, your willingness to fight your apparent obstacles and your determination to succeed.
Secondly, it reminds me of the story of Androcles and the Lion and as I look more closely at this card I see that the man has the lion’s paw resting on his thigh and his hand grasps the paw as if to turn it over in readiness for removing the thorn. No wonder the lion looks so vicious! He's in pain! No wonder the man is focused. His job is delicate...

Now we see that what we thought was a possible weapon is in fact a useless tool in the face of this challenge.

The fable had a happy ending and so I believe does your story dear songstress. Time to unlock that cage and spread your wings to fly.
