He was born 9/2/55, I was born 5/9/58 at 7:59 a.m.

He currently has been in a long term live in relationship with a girl, but we have been on again, off again having an affair. He has told me he loves me, but won't leave his g/f. Please tell me how compatible our signs are and whether there is any hope for us.

From a non-Astrological standpoint, I would suggest that if the guy has a girlfriend, you should steer clear of the dude unless he happens to decide on his own to leave his girlfriend and is then free. There is no room for a third party in any romantic relationship. I don't mean this as a judgement on your character, but the situation is not fair to you, the man, or the girlfriend.

Now as far as compatibility in a romantic relationship, there are many things you can look at in your Astrological charts, the simplest of these being the Sun sign. With Sun sign compatibility, I find it works reasonably well with any relationship, not just in a romantic sense. I have never personally experienced NOT being able to get along with someone strictly based on their Sun sign, but I have noticed that I do get along very well with those of my compatible signs. The most common link in Sun sign compatibility is the element (fire, earth, air, water) Virgo and Taurus are both Earth signs so as they are in the same element, are generally reguarded as being among the best for compatibility. The other Earth sign is Capricorn, so you may also feel comfy around Capricorns...and of course your fellow Taureans.
