I was given a gift card and am wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for a more advanced astrology book. I am looking for an in depth book on planets, houses, cusps, etc.. I have The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need and two great books on using astrology along side tarot, but am looking for more advanced stuff on astrology.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Victoria

Dear Victoria

Some suggestions for your enquiry regarding an advanced Astrology book:-

The Modern Textbook of Astrology by Margaret E. Hone

Alan Oken’s Complete Astrology
by Alan Oken - also Soul Centered Astrology by Alan Oken

The Eagle and the Lark by Bernadette Brady (ISBN 0-87728-736-8)

A Handbook for Humanistic Astrologer by Michael R. Meyer (ISBN 0-385-05729-6)

The best books on Planets – both by Robert Hand (anything by this author worth reading):

Planets in Youth (ISBN 0-914918-26-5) – this is actually a beginner’s book – but essential reading.

Planets in Transit (ISBN 0-914918-24-9) ditto

On Houses:

The Twelve Houses by Howard Sasportas (ISBN 0-85030-385-0) (anything by this author is excellent)

On Aspects:

Dynamics of Aspect Analysis by Bill Tierney (ISBN 0-916360-18-0)

Anything by Liz Green – especially Saturn in Transit- a New Look at an Old Devil

If interested in Chiron – best book is Chiron and the Healing Journey by Melanie Reinhart (ISBN 0-14-019209-3)

If interested in mid points then the bible for this is The Combination of Stellar Influences by Reinhold Ebertin (ISBN 0-08690-087-X)

Depending upon how advanced – there are many, many books on specialty areas – such as Secondary Progressions, Solar Returns, Solar Arc Directions, Eclipses, The Lunation Cycle and some excellent reading on each planet. If you know of any special area of interest I can recommend authors and books.

Sasha Fenton writes terrific books for the beginner and her book on the Ascendant signs is well worth while.

Hope this is of some help – know it seems a lot but the list goes on and on.

Regards Barb

Thank you so much Victoria. Please thank Barbara for me also.

I am getting two of the books mentioned above. Liz Green's "Saturn in Transit" and the one Alan Oken book keeps coming up when I do review searches. So I'll be getting the "Alan Oken's Complete Astrology". I hope by weeks end. I haven't heard or read much about a few of the other authors mentioned. So she also has given me a great list to do some research on.

I love books! wink.gif

Thanks a lot for all of this info.

Botyfltiger...

The books by Alan Oken and Margaret E. Hone are very old titles. Some of the "outlook" by the authors seems dated to me.

Check out this author: Noel Tyl. I can recall his book, "Prediction in Astrology" or close to that. In the seventies he did about a 14-volume series on astrology, well worth a look. If you think that's old, it's at least twenty years more recent than Margaret Hone's book.

If he is still living, Noel Tyl is possibly one of the best Western astrologers alive today. Oh, just remembered another of his books: "The horoscope as identity".

Thank you for the recommendation I will look into him and see... I am liking the Alen Oken's complete astrology. After only having 2 books, one the Only astrology book you'll ever need and don't laugh, Zolar's astrology. An original printed paperback given to me by my mother at age 8 or 9 laugh.gif This book is a breath of fresh air.

Boty,

It's possible to get quite deeply into all this. While I think of it. there was a book by astrologer Carl Payne Tobey printed in the 1960s. Called the "Astrology of Inner Space". In it, Tobey shows his rediscovery of the "secondary horoscope" which I haven't noticed anybody follow up on. For a serious attempt at statistical analysis, chase up the relevant work by Michel Gauquelin. Sorry I do not remember the title. He does show some definite results, but they are not always in conformance with tradition.

Also there is the system devised by Reinhold Ebertin. I think the title was something like "Combination of Stellar Influences". As I say, it gets pretty tangled trying to sort out what is of most value, though certainly interesting.
