My first thought on all this is to make it right for him. Pay him the money back and show him you are a stand up person by either arranging a series of payments directly to him or opening a savings account to gather a lump-sum payment.

Make it right and you will be on much more solid ground with him whether you two reconcile or not.

To be honest...

I see him as someone that sort of forces himself not to get too emotional... in this respect, I think he has really forced himself to move on

I think you're right in that he still loves you, but that doesn't really make a difference (as sad as this sounds)

i think you would be wise to focus on moving on too
