We hear a lot of mention about balance today and about having a balanced lifestyle, but what does this really mean? Having balance in your life is different for every one. Its the balance in your life that feels right to YOU thats important.
Often we do things because we feel we should do them or we dont want to let someone else down, and this is very often to the detriment of ourselves. It's like the safety message when you get on an airplane where it asks you to put your own oxygen mask on before that of your child. Well balance in your life works the same way. You need to look after yourself first and then you are able to help others.
Balance is about doing what FEELS right for you and not what you logically think you should be able to do and be. This requires a process of asking yourself, what it is you really want to achieve in your life? Then break it down into achievable chunks. Is it financial security? Or is keeping fit and healthy high on your value list. Look at each area of your life; I break these down to the following 7 groups: Spiritual, Financial, Career, Family, Physical, Social and Mental. Each and every one of these areas are important and it depends upon our value system as to how much time, effort and energy we put into each area.
"It's like the safety message when you get on an airplane where it asks you to put your own oxygen mask on before that of your child... Balance in your life works the same way."
Remember, balance is an individual thing, what is right for you is not right for someone else.
Heres an exercise you can do to help clarify where your value system lies at the moment and it will also help you to change it to where you want it to be so your life is balance more accordingly to what is important to you. The trick is to align and balance your life to your values.
Firstly take a writing size sheet of paper and write the 7 areas of life down the right hand side one under the other on seven different lines, then put 3 columns next to it..
On the top of the first column write the word PRESENT, this is how you would rate your present value system. Write in the columns next to the area of life a rating of 1 to 7 on how you value the break-up of your life. For instance, 1 being the highest value and 7 being the least value. If your highest value is physical and health then put this as number one. If your least value area of life is Social then put this as number 7. Sometimes it is easier to do this exercise by starting at 7 and work upwards.
Then on the top of the next column write the words ACTUAL. Now next to the area of life, put in the rating 1 to 7 of the actual time you spend in each life area.. If most of your time is spent at the office then put career as your number 1 rating and so on.
On the top of the 3rd column write the words GOAL. Now put your 1 to 7 rating down on how you would ideally like to have your values and life split for each life area.
As you review the results you will notice that these 3 columns are quite different. For instance if you have put your family and physical as your highest goal value and you are spending most of your time in the office then you are in conflict with what you really want and are not in balance and in line to achieving your true goals.
By the time you complete the 3rd column this is generally a very revealing exercise.
So now list the 7 areas of life on 7 new lines and next to each area write a brief description on what you are going to do to bring your life into balance, that is, into the balance that you want it to be, your goal balance. You can also use this exercise for short term goals, like maybe you have a three month study goal to learn a new skill or loose weight and get into shape, so you can change your values around to suit for this period of time..
Keep in mind that where most of your attention and focus goes then this is what your life will represent.
If you listen carefully, your inner voice will tell you if you are not on the right track and you are out of your personal balance. The feeling of having your equilibrium in place is a very important aspect. If you feel that something is not sitting well with you, perhaps others are putting unrealistic demands on you and you are unable to fulfill your newly formed balanced life schedule then reevaluate your plan or reevaluate how important others demands are to you. Remember you need to look after YOU first before you can look after the needs of others.
Firstly, sit quietly where you will not be disturbed and ask your inner self, your inner intelligence for guidance. Is there another way to achieve your new life personal balance plan? Go through each life area separately. It may just be a matter of time management and reorganizing your time to fit your new plan into action.
You may also need to ask the other important people in your life for assistance in helping you achieve your plan. When you have other responsibilities and relationships to think about it is difficult to change your plans without communication and consideration of those who are close and important to you.
If you are having trouble coming to a decision about how important an issue is to you then do The Balance Process. The Balance Process is a great very effective quick exercise to help you gaining clarity and certainty on difficult or confusing decisions. It helps to clarify where you stand on any given issue whether it is a home, personal or a business decision.
