Stress and anxiety get in the way of your daily productivity and as a society we experience stress just from our everyday life. Meditation and relaxation can be used as a tool to help overcome stress and stay in a controlled relaxed state gaining you more focus and clarity when you most need it.
Well what is it, Meditation or relaxation? Todays meditation is viewed much differently than it used to be. You dont have to be sitting like a Monk in the Himalayans to be able to master peace and serenity in your life. Research has shown that meditation and relaxation techniques can be very beneficial to your health and it can improve chronic pain dramatically. Research has also shown that the subconscious mind is more susceptible to change and so by mastering the art of meditation and relaxation you have a more powerful tool to make positive changes in your life.
Meditation and relaxation techniques have also been shown to be one of the most effective ways to over stress which is one of the major areas of concern amongst young and old during our present times. Extreme and constant stress in our lives can have an adverse effect on our ability to live the lives we desire and also on the time we spend with those we love and cherish. This can result in us not being a 100% functional in our health and daily activities, including simple things like making everyday decisions for ourselves and more importantly life changing decisions which path the way for our future and also have an impact on the future of those close to us.
"Meditation... (is) not something that is only for religious, spiritual or mystical people."
Extreme stress will ignite our fight or flight reaction and if we are constantly under stress with no relief then our systems are always on guard in this fight or flight position which means you are in a constant state of tension. Eventually this wears on your system and can lead to an emotionally or physical breakdown. At the very least your energy levels will be put under strain and your productivity will be compromised.
By practicing a meditative relaxation technique daily you can have an increased feeling of well-being. As you go into a relaxed state you release tension, your heart rate slows down and your brain activity also slows down allowing you to have less anxiety and to be more reflective and objective about your life, others and the situations you are currently facing.
Meditation is a form of stilling the mind and becoming centered within yourself. Its a tool to gain greater focus and clarity in your life and be able to have more certainty in your decision-making in all areas of your life. Its not something that is only for religious, spiritual or mystical people. It has many different forms and is a relaxation tool that anyone can access and use. Its about controlling the insistent noise that goes on inside of your brain, the mind clutter that never stops. Its about not noticing the noise, which is happening around you. Its about becoming totally present with life and what you are doing and whom you are doing it with. Its simply about getting the very best out of every moment.
Breathing is one of the most import aspects of meditation and in your early stages of meditation your mind is likely to wander so it is good to remember to always bring your concentration back to your breath and continue the relaxation process. Once you gain a stillness of mind you will reach your inner self, your inner intelligence. And each time you do the process it will get easier and more powerful. At the end of each session you will feel more relaxed, and have a feeling of inner health with more focus and clarity of mind.
How long does it take? Well you can get organized, and prepare to sit for a 20 minute session or longer which will certainly give you great benefits but not everyone has this length of time available to them. With kids, family, work and personal commitments it sounds incredible, but it can be difficult for us to have 20 minutes a day to ourselves so try to start with 5 and see the difference.
