I know we all have a fascination with gems of all descriptions. I know I have. So I've compiled some information on some of the most well known gemstones, their Birthstone Months, Healing Powers and other information you may find interesting.
Agate (Quartz: Chalcedony)
Agate, is a distinctly banded variety of Chalcedony, and is a variety of Quartz gemstones composed of layers of quartz, sometimes of different colours. When it is concentrically banded (often in rather wild patterns) it is called “agate." When it is in flat layers or bands it is called “onyx."
Colours: Clear, Purple, Rose, Black, Yellow, Brown, Green, Orange, etc.
Healing General: Good for transmutation; helps with the emotion of acceptance; gives a mellow, blended aspect; beneficial in stomach complaints.
Botswana Agate: Use with high-pressure oxygen therapy; smoke inhalation.
Fire Agate: Master healer with colour therapy; enhances all essences; grounds and balances; sexual & heart chakra binder; burns energy.
Moss Agate: Emotional priorities; mental priorities; colon, circulatory, pancreas & pulses; blood sugar balance; agriculture.

Anniversary Gemstone: Agate is the anniversary gemstone for the 12th year of marriage. Moss Agate is the anniversary gemstone for the 14th year of marriage.
Mystical Properties: Hindu mystics believe that agate can help children overcome their fears, learn to walk earlier and maintain their balance. Moss Agate is said to help one get in touch with nature. Tree Agate is said to help with introspection. It helps one view themselves with more clarity and see the world through a broader viewpoint.
Folk Lore: Agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet in ancient times. It was said to quench thirst and protect from fevers. Persian magicians used agate to divert storms. A famous collection of two to four thousand agate bowls which was accumulated by Mithridate, king of Pontus, shows the enthusiasm with which agate was regarded. Legend has it that agate guarded the wearer from all dangers and endowed the wearer with a bold heart. Wearing Agate was believed to cure insomnia and thought to insure pleasant dreams.
Alexandrite (Chrysoberyl)
Name Origin from the Greek chrysos - "golden" and the mineral beryl.
Alexandrite is a green gem variety of the mineral chrysoberyl that actually changes colour from green in daylight to red in incandescent light.
Colours Green, blue.
Healing: Low self-esteem and to aid difficulty centrering; central nervous system disorders; spleen and pancreas.

Anniversary Gemstone:Alexandrite is the anniversary gemstone for the 45th and 55th year of marriage.
Mystical Properties:
Alexandrite can assist one in centrering the self, fortify self-esteem, and enhance ones ability to experience joy.
Folk Lore: Alexandrite was discovered in 1830 in Czarist Russia. Since the Old Russian imperial colours are red and green it was named after Czar Alexander II on the occasion of his coming of age. Alexandrite is looked upon as a good omen in Russia.
Amber
Amber (Fossilized Resin)
Amber is a very light stone, a solidified, fossilized resin of now-extinct conifer trees. Its colour is usually honey brown. Sometimes insects or pieces of earth or leaves are present in the amber. The fossils are mostly insects such as gnats, flies, wasps, bees and ants. Occasionally more exotic insects are trapped in the amber such as grasshoppers, preying mantises, beetles, moths, termites, butterflies, etc. Other non-insect animals are found in amber too such as spiders, centipedes, scorpions and even frogs and lizards.
Colours: Ranges from yellow to orange. Some amber has been found with red, green, blue, violet, and black hues. Amber often has inclusions such as air bubbles, insects or pine needles from the way it is formed.
Healing: Amber is used for healing the physical body. It carries a negative electrical energy charge and therefore is good to draw power and energy into its bearer. Memory loss; eccentric behaviour; anxiety; inability to make decisions; thyroid, inner ear & neuro-tissue strengtheners; activates altruistic nature; realization of the spiritual intellect.

Amethyst (Quartz)
Name Origin from the German "quarz", of uncertain origin.
A variety of Quartz. Purple, lilac and mauve quartz is called amethyst. The highest quality is transparent.

Folk Lore: Often amethyst is given as a symbol of sincerity, security, and peace of mind. Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it! The gemstone still symbolizes sobriety.
Aquamarine
Aquamarine draws its name from "sea water". Aqua (water) sparkles like the sea and its colour is pale to deep blue, often tinged with a hint of sea-green-hence the name. The highest quality is transparent.

Anniversary Gemstone:Aquamarine is the anniversary gemstone for the 16th and 19th year of marriage
Mystical Properties: Aquamarine is often used to (hopefully) experience love and mercy. It is said to help ease depression and grief.
Folk Lore: According to some legends, it is the treasure of mermaids, with the power to keep sailors safe at sea. Aquamarine is said to be a particularly strong charm when immersed in water (which is a good thing, since that is when sailors need its power most!) Aquamarine is said to re-awaken love in long-married couples and signify the making of new friends. Legend has it that to wear aquamarine in earrings would bring love and affection. It is given as a symbol of beauty, honesty, and loyalty. The name "aquamarine" means sea water.
Aventurine
This form of Crypto crystalline Quartz contains inclusions of small crystals that reflect light and give a range of colours - depending on the nature of the inclusion. Aventurines claim to fame is having inclusions that look like sparkles. Extremely high quality aventurine (without the inclusions), looks like an emerald.
Colours: Aventurine may be green, greenish-brown, bluish-white, bluish green and orange.
Healing: Aventurine is used for physical healing.

Folk Lore: There was a custom of assigning various Masculine and Feminine Saints with a particular gem for use in talismans. The name Andrew (patron Saint Andrew) is associated with Aventurine.
Beryl
This gems name, brilliance is possibly derived from the ancient Greek word for beryl, berullos, which means crystal.
Colours: Colourless beryl, or goshenite, which shows off the brilliance of this gem family, pink and peach morganite, heliodor, also known as golden beryl; rare red beryl, pale green beryl, which is a green version of aquamarine. Smoky quartz—also known as cairngorm—beryl and granite. Smoky gemstone, Beryl Crystals are yellow-green and yellow colours.
Healing: To retard Laziness; hiccups; swollen glands; eye diseases; bowel cancer. Ancient literature notes that Pliny used powdered beryl to cure eye injuries. It is said to protect travellers from danger and to treat disorders of the heart and spine, good for healing problems with the physical heart, liver, lungs, mouth, throat, stomach, physical energy level, and digestive system. Red Beryl is related to the heart and sacral chakras.

Folk Lore: Legend says that Beryl was used to ward off demons and evil spirits. Other legends about Beryl indicate it was used to promote cheerfulness and marital love, and maintain youthfulness. Bloodstone is an inexpensive earth stone. Sometimes, Fancy Jasper is called bloodstone. However these are very different stones as Fancy Jasper comes in many colours
Colours: Bloodstone, green jasper dotted with bright red spots of iron oxide was also known as Heliotrope because in ancient times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun.
Healing: Circulation; all purpose healer and cleanser; cures stomach and bowel pain; purifies bloodstream; bladder; strengthens blood purifying organs.

Carnelian
Carnelian is a reddish variety of quartz, a translucent to opaque. It is used for great beads, cabochons and cameos.
Colours: Ranges from bright orange to reddish orange. The shades of red are due to iron oxide.
Healing: Grounding; stimulates curiosity and initiative; focuses attention on the present moment; use with Citrine on lower 3 chakras (solar plexus, spleen and root); aids digestion.

Folk Lore: Carnelian was said to bring luck, protection and comfort in the 1700's. In the 1800's, Carnelian was said to help those who needed courage to speak.
Chalcedony
Chalcedony is a catch all term that includes many well known varieties of cryptocrystalline quartz gemstones. Chalcedony includes agate, bloodstone, carnelian, chert, chrysoprase, flint, heliotrope, jasper, moss agate, onyx, plasma, prase, sardonyx, thundereggs,, mocha stone, sard, petrified wood, and petrified dinosaur bone just to name a few of the better known varieties.
Colours: It has a waxy lustre and appears in a great variety of colours -- usually blue-white, buff, light tan, grey, yellow or brown.
Healing: Touchiness; melancholy; fever; gallstones; leukaemia; eye problems; stimulates maternal feelings and creativity; emotional release. Carnelian is associated with the root and sacral chakras. Physically, carnelian has been used to heal open sores, rejuvenate tissues and cells, rheumatism, kidney stones and other kidney problems, gall stones, colds, pollen allergies, and neuralgia.

Healing: It is a powerful healing stone that aids failing eyesight or other eye problems, immune system response, fertility issues, gout, mental illness, relieves fevers and excess body heat, and can help guard against sexually transmitted diseases. Chrysoprase is related primarily to the heart chakra, which it activates, opens and energizes. It also aligns all the chakras.

Citrine is a beautiful yellow stone.
Colour: Named from the French name for lemon, "citron," many citrines have a juicy lemon colour.
Healing: Heart, kidney, liver and muscle healer; appendicitis; gangrene; red and white corpuscles; digestive tract; cleanses vibrations in the atmosphere; creativity; helps personal clarity; will bring out problems in the solar plexus and the heart; eliminates self-destructive tendencies.

Coral is created by sea life. It is the skeletal remains of coral polyps.

Healing: Physically coral is used for general healing, blood and circulatory system issues, kidney, bladder, epilepsy, bone and bone marrow, eye problems, and the respiratory system.

Diamond
The name "diamond" comes from the Greek word "adamas" which means unconquerable - suggesting the eternity of love. Diamonds are special gifts due to their glamour, rarity, durability and beauty. Diamonds are usually colourless.
Colours: Colourless, however, brown, yellow, green, blue, pink, red, grey and black variations are also found depending on the impurities present.
Healing: All brain diseases; pituitary and pineal glands; draws out toxicity, poison remedy. Historically, crushed diamond has been used as a cure for many ailments. Diamond is associated with the crown chakra.

Emerald
Emerald is a medium to dark green beryl which derives its colour from chromium and vanadium. Always rich green in colour, most emeralds have many "inclusions," or flaws.
Colours:Rich green.
Healing: Radiation toxicity; all mental illness; circulatory and neurological disorders; transmits balance, healing and patience; increases psychic and clairvoyant abilities; meditation; keener insight into dreams. Emerald is associated with the heart chakra.

Folk Lore: Archaeologists have traced the origins of the use of emerald to almost 3000 B.C. in both ancient Egypt and India. The Moguls of India loved emeralds so much they inscribed them with sacred text and wore them as talismans. For example, one talismanic emerald is deep green and weighs 78 carats. Around the edge in Persian runs the inscription: "He who possesses this charm shall enjoy the special protection of God." Cleopatra prized her emeralds more than any other gem. According to legend, Emeralds strengthen the owner's memory, quicken the intelligence and assist in predicting the future. Emerald is said to be the Spring Gemstone of the Season.
Garnet
The word "garnet" is believed to have come from the Greek word "granatum," or pomegranate seed, because ancient jewellery makers grouped the tiny gemstones in a cluster that resembled the seed-filled fruit.
Colours: Ranges from colourless to black though it is often thought of only as red. Deep red in colour, almandine garnet is the most popular gem in the garnet family. Occasionally deep enough red to appear black, almandine garnet is sometimes hollowed in order to let light shine through the stone, highlighting its red colour. Garnet displays the greatest variety of colour of any mineral, occurring in every colour except blue.
Healing: Rhodolite: Capillaries; skin elasticity; protection from pre- cancerous conditions.
Spessartine: Bad dreams; depression; anger; self esteem; haemorrhages; hormone imbalances; inflammations; sexual disease. It can also assist mystically with success in one's career and building one's self-confidence. Garnet is associated primarily with the root chakra, but also with other chakras depending on its colour.

Mystical Properties: Garnet has Mystical Properties and is used primarily as a power stone. Garnet is a stone of romantic love and passion. It is used in metaphysics to enhance sensuality, sexuality, and intimacy. It is said to bring positive thoughts and boosts energy, and be excellent for manifestation.
Folk Lore: It is said that Noah used a garnet on the bow of his ark to help navigate at night, and garnets have long been carried by people who are travelling, because they believe it will protect them from accidents. Legend has it that garnets protect their owners from nightmares, and garnets were even used as bullets because the shooters thought the red colour would increase the intensity of the wound. It is also a protective energy stone which is especially effective for protection from evil, and is used for gentle spiritual healing. Lore says that garnet can heal the blood, heart and lungs.
Jade
The term Jade is a generic term that actually covers three minerals. They are Jadeite, Nephrite, and Chloromenlanite. It should have a 'greasy' appearance when it is polished.
Colours:Ranging from the many shades of green, to yellow, red, black, and white. Lavender Jade is the most highly valued, and also the rarest forms of the stone. The white variety of Jadeite with the brilliant streaks of deep emerald green gets it colour from the element 'Chromium'. ‘Nephrite’ is usually some shade of green: it may range from sea green, grey green, celadon, lettuce green, grassy green, and spinach green. Other colours of nephrite include blue grey, reddish grey, greenish grey, yellow, and black.
Healing: Kidney, heart, larynx, liver, parathyroid, spleen, thymus, thyroid & parasympathetic ganglia healer; strengthens body; longevity. Nephrite jade is a stone of the heart. As such it is related to the heart chakra and has a beneficial effect on all heart chakra related issues, and all love relationships. It is also considered to be good for emotional balance and stability. Physically, nephrite jade is used in the crystal healing of the physical heart, and kidney problems.

Anniversary Gemstone: Jade is the anniversary gemstone for the 12th, 30th and 35th year of marriage.
Mystical Properties: Jade is said to help the wearer relax. It is considered a very balanced stone -- it helps the wearer in both the vision of tasks to do, as well as doing the actual tasks.
Folk Lore: Jade is known as "The stone of the loins". In ancient days it was believed to have great medicinal powers. It was believed that if the stone was laid on the body in the area of the lower back or sides it would cure kidney disorders. Jade has been thought of as the concentrated essence of love. In China, jade is regarded as a special stone. It is believed that when handled some of the secret virtue of the substance is absorbed into the body. Jade has been treasured in China as the royal gemstone for 5,000 years. Legend has it that the Spanish conquers of Central America wore amulets of Jadeite to prevent and cure hip and kidney complaints. Jade of all kinds is a very protective stone and is particularly good protection for children, against illness, and for psychic protection. It has energetic clearing properties, and is useful to keep with other stones.
Jasper
Jasper is an opaque, impure Chalcedony.
Colours: Rich clay red colour, with a slight greyish-black matrix. Also yellow, green, and greyish blue. Often jasper is multi-coloured.
Healing: In the physical realm, jasper is used for the liver, gallbladder, soothing the stomach, and balancing yin/yang energies. Red Jasper - Physically it assists in healing by maintaining positive movement with all types of disorders and disease. The ancient Greeks believed that it had the power to increase strength and make its wearer invisible in times of emergency. The Greeks felt Topaz gave them strength. Its mystical curative powers waxed and waned with the phases of the moon: it was said to cure insomnia, asthma, and haemorrhages. Wear topaz only if you wish to be clear-sighted: legend has it that it dispels all enchantment and helps to improve eyesight as well!
