According to newspaper reports, a threat was received about a planned assassination of Prime Minister, John Howard. For this, a senior officer consulted a clairvoyant in Cooma in Southern New South Wales, causing his suspension. In the report, it was stated that the officer gave classified information to the psychic in discussing the said threat. Because of this, the AFP is conducting an internal investigation on the said act.

According to a spokesman, the AFP does not condone using psychics in matters of security.

The spokesman further said that it is a regular practice for the Prime Minister to not give any comment on issues that are related to security.

Though Jim Torr of the AFP Association refuses to comment on the issue, he assures everyone that a fair treatment will be given to all officers who are facing investigation.

“In relation to our members, we play an intrinsic part in that process, we accompany them through the interview phases and we work cooperatively with the AFP on that basis. But again I make the point, the majority of these sorts of serious allegations, after investigation, wind up to be unsubstantiated or not what they appear to be at the face of it,” said Mr. Torr.
