The Google Trends has been reigned by search terms related to the news about Ophiuchus. The questioning spirit seeped in gradually because many people believe that the existence of the 13th astrological sign may change everything that people believed in. There is an explanation with regards to including Ophiucus to the 12 existing ones. It was formulated by Babylonians and they read horoscopes based on the constellation in which the sun was ‘in’ on the day a person was born. Ophiucus is said to be a constellation and obviously should be included or added in astrological signs.
But this was picked up by several media outlets and interpreted to read that astronomers from the Minnesota Planetarium Society had found that because of the moon’s gravitational pull on Earth, the alignment of the stars was pushed by about a month and listed “new Zodiac,” Ophiuchus between Scorpio and Sagittarius in late autumn.
This phenomenon has taken away the attention of people from more important stories and developments. This news may have thrown light on the media perspective of the recent events, still, there are another underlying concern of people’s growing susceptibility and the troubles of ‘information overload’ – which refers to the difficulty a person faces in understanding an issue and making decisions that can be caused by the presence of too much information. And this affects the person’s cognitive performance such as decision making skills as he or she is unable to filter the necessary information from the unnecessary data.
The news on the 13th zodiac sign is a great example. If the information about it has been filtered at the editorial-level for better clarity as at the person-level, the news would have not caused so much commotion a few years ago. The news together with the Internet itself has revolutionized the way news is delivered to audience which cannot be brushed aside.
