Compatibility is a tricky thing to get right – often, when we first meet someone, we can fall so head over heels that we change ourselves, our emotional styles, needs and ways of being, to be the way that our partner wants us to be. Over time, this can prove disastrous as we realize that we have been compromising who we are.

That is not to say that if we find ourselves incompatible that we need to call the relationship at all – the chances are that we will certainly not be perfectly matched in every single area – which is completely normal and healthy with two distinct individuals relating to each other. Of course, if there are certain areas in which we are highly incompatible, such as our values, we do need to either find a way to compromise or decide for ourselves whether or not we can sustain the relationship.

The Tarot is an excellent way to get some insight into the situation; and bring some light to the relationship, and even better if we can do this with our partner. We can also do this reading with a dear friend, a parent or a sibling, as it doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship at all.

A few questions that we can ask ourselves before we do the Tarot session are:

  • How much do I want this relationship – is it healthy for me?
  • Is this person willing to work on the issues presented by the cards?
  • Am I willing to work on the issues presented by the cards?
  • Am I ready to deal with what the cards present in a mature way?
  • Have I got enough objectivity to look at the reading as a guide, rather than become victimized or worried?
  • If the cards show me certain incompatibilities, which areas for me are non – comprisable?
  • Which areas am I willing to sacrifice in terms of compatibility?

Taking stock of these questions will shed some light and get you into a place of readiness before beginning your journey.

Top Tips for the Compatibility Reading

  • After taking all of the above into account, find a lovely space to do the reading, on a long table or big surface – a place that you can perhaps keep coming back to, to look at and study the reading when you need to.
  • Get your friend, partner or loved one to join if they want to, or if they can, as it can make the reading that much richer and more useful.
  • Pick the deck you feel would be the most helpful for you – perhaps using a different one can give more refreshing insight.
  • Meditate on your relationship holding the other in mind as you do the reading.
  • Ask for guidance, if you need it, from your higher self, your angels or the Gods or Goddesses you believe in.
  • Let go of your own preconceived expectations or judgement. Try not to project anything onto your reading and remain as objective as possible.
  • Shuffle the cards however you like, then cut them into three decks. Pick the one that calls to you.
  • Either fan the cards out and pick them out one by one or simply choose from the top. Lay them all face down in the beginning, as you will turn them over one by one.

How to Lay the Cards out

This one is fairly straightforward; as it simply comprises of two straight lines of cards next to each other. VERY IMPORTANT: before shuffling the cards, pick out the two “significators” that would represent you and the other person as follows:

  • If you or them are Female, pick a Queen card. Then, look up their birthday and discover their Starsign, and pick the matching Queen – Sword Queens are Aquarius, Gemini or Libra women, Wands Queens are Aries, Sagittarius or Leo women, Cups queens are Cancerian Pisces or Scorpio women and Pentacles Queens are Taurus, Capricorn or Virgo women.
  • If you or them are Male, pick a King or Knights card (Knights are under 30, Kings are over 30) and do the same as with the Queen; finding the Starsign that correlates to the suit as above : Sword Kings or Knights are Aquarius, Gemini or Libra men, Wands Kings or Knights are Aries, Sagittarius or Leo men, Cups Kings or Knights are Cancerian, Pisces or Scorpio men and Pentacles Kings or Knights are Taurus, Capricorn or Virgo men.
  • If you are working with a young person, pick a Page as per the above.

Put the two significator cards side by side, and then lay out each card one by one – starting with the “Emotional Needs” card, put that one underneath Yourself, then the next “Emotional Needs” card underneath the card that represents your Other person. Do this for the remaining four card, so that at the end, you have two neat rows of cards next to each other.

How to Interpret the Compatibility Reading

Card Number One: You

This is the card that you have picked to show you – it may be a Queen or a King, or a Knight depending on your gender, and specific to your starsign. Study this card carefully to get a little insight into yourself, how the person may be sitting, if they are holding anything and the general energy that they are giving off.

Card Number Two: Them

This is the card that you have specifically picked to show this person; and it should be compared to the card that you have picked to show you. Notice of the two cards are relating to each other if there seems to be harmony, or conflict. Are they facing each other, or are they turned away from one another?

Card Number Three: Your Emotional Needs

This card is a very important one, which shows what you emotionally need when it comes to the relationship and in general; and what nurtures you, what makes you emotionally happy in life. A difficult card here might show that your emotional needs might be neglected or hard to express – for example, the Tower card here might show that your emotional needs have been destroyed in the past, or are chaotic and unpredictable.

Card Number Four: Their Emotional Needs

This card shows what your Other person needs to feel emotionally fulfilled, what makes them feel nurtured and cared for and happy in life. It is imperative to compare this card to your Emotional Needs to see where you may be compatible or incompatible but most importantly, how you could meet each other’s needs.

Card Number Five: Your Intellectual Style

This card shows the way that you think and communicate, and with communication being so important in the relationship, it is a crucial card to understand. A challenging card here might show that you may have difficulty communicating clearly and gently, and may be an area to work on.

Card Number Six: Their Intellectual Style

This shows the Other person’s intellectual style, and comparing this card to your Intellectual style can be very revealing indeed, as to whether you are speaking the same language, or whether you’re talking over each other. It certainly shows what you can learn in terms of your communication.

Card Number Seven: Your Values

This is a VERY important card, perhaps the most important card for the vast majority of people – it shows what you value and hold dear in your life, what is important to you, especially right now. Values do change and shift, so it is crucial to understand this card and to compare to your partner or friends’ values. If a negative card appears here, it may be that your values are compromised. For example, having the Nine of Swords here could show that your values around rest, mental peace and calm have been recently challenged.

Card Number Eight: Their Values

This card of course shows their values, what is most important to this person, and comparing this card to your own Values card will be very important here. This may be an area that could be tough to compromise on, and you may have to be ready to agree to disagree.

Card Number Nine: General Guidance

This card is a general Advice/ Guidance card for the future and should be read with openmindedness rather than absolute law.

Example of a Compatibility Tarot Reading

Roger and Cara are a new couple, and they are just beginning to learn about each other. They are using this Tarot spread as a tool to get to know one another better and to open up the doors of communication with each other. They have decided to do the reading together.

Card Number One: You

This card represents Cara. She was born mid-February, which makes her an Aquarius. Hence, her significator card is the Queen of Swords. The Queen of Swords is depicted as a women on a throne, facing sideways and offering advice. She is seen as someone who is wise, very rational and perhaps a bit detached.

Card Number Two: Them

The card that represents Roger is the King of Wands, because he is over 30 years old, and he is an Aries. He looks as if he is about to leap out of his chair with impatience, and his energy seems bright, active and passionate, especially in comparison to the cool Swords Queen, He is ‘facing” her and she him, so that shows an openness to each other.

Card Number Three: Your Emotional Needs

Cara’s emotional needs card is the Moon, a Major Arcana. She might not be entirely certain what her needs are, or she might be very afraid of asking for what she needs, as this card can represent fear in some cases. It is a card of the subconscious and of memories, so she may suppress her needs in her life and must work on making them a reality. She may also need quite a bit of time to rest and dream and to work through her childhood to become emotionally effective.

Card Number Four: Their Emotional Needs

Roger’s emotional needs are represented by the Four of Cups card, which depicts a man under a tree, arms folded, refusing the cup that is being offered to him. Roger might be a touch selfish with his emotional needs, and become sulky when he fees they are not being met, despite people around him trying. He may need to learn not to withdraw, like Cara, and instead of hiding away, he should open up a little. Both seem to have a tendency to suppress their true needs which may create problems late down the line. Roger may need emotional space from time to time.

Card Number Five: Your Intellectual Style

Cara’s intellectual style is represented by the Three of Wands card. She has a passionate way of communicating, as per the fire element of Wands, and she is someone who may be quite broad minded, staring out over the ocean figuratively speculating and looking at the bigger picture. Her mind may be very expansive and resourceful.

Card Number Six: Their Intellectual Style

Roger’s intellectual style is the King of Pentacles, representing a much more grounded way of thinking than Cara. He may be less broad minded, yet extremely businesslike in his approach, which can make him very successful. He might be thinking of security, money and business, whereas Cara is perhaps a little more mentally creative. They can make a good team once they learn how to play to their strengths.

Card Number Seven: Your Values

The Values for Cara are represented by the Fool card, which shows that she values freedom, adventure and travel; that she loves to take a chance and throw caution to the wind – this is what she thrives on.

Card Number Eight: Their Values

The Values for Roger are shown by the Hermit card, which indicates that Roger loves his alone time, also backed up by his previous five of cups card. He values learning, wisdom and solitude. With Cara’s desire for Freedom and Roger’s value on being alone, they have a lovely way to help each other fulfil their values, by Cara going off and giving Roger space, she fulfils her own values as well as his.

Card Number Nine: General Guidance

The card that has appeared at the end of this reading is a fairly challenging one – the Tower. It indicates that the couple will be going through a time of huge upheaval, and that they need to be prepared for times of insecurity in life together – that they need to use their mostly very positive cards to see them through the difficult periods that they will be experiencing.

Pros and Cons of a Compatibility Tarot Reading

  • This is an excellent reading for ANY relationship, whether Love, Family, Business  or friendships, which makes it very flexible and easy to do with anyone.
  • If there are other areas which are important for you or your Other, you can add that category to the reading – such as Spiritual Compatibility, Sexual Compatibility or even Financial Compatibility.
  • This reading may not show the entire picture, as there are many other areas in which they could go well together, or not. It may be necessary to become creative with the reading and add or take away a few cards.
  • If a new couple, this reading may cause overthinking and become a touch disruptive in terms of the natural evolution of the couple.
