The notion of having a Soulmate can be a rather romantic one; and as writer, Elizabeth Gilbert says: “People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.”

A Soulmate will challenge us, and is someone that we might end up for a little while, or a lifetime – whatever the time period is, they always teach is an important lesson that we need to learn in this life. These lessons can be very challenging, and the idea here is that our Soulmate is meant to hep us pay off a karmic debt to each other. A Soulmate goes a little deeper than a Life Partner, in the way that they get under your skin and unlock all of your inner wounds and riches, whereas a Life Partner tends to be one we “settle” with, who may not “get” us as much as a Soulmate would.

You might get a sense of déjà vu with your Soulmate, as if you spent lifetimes together – and you probably have! The relationship may feel very intense, and you will be challenged to face aspects of yourself over and over again with this person. They are here to help you grow into your best self, and that growth can sometimes be quite tough.

How do you know when you have found your soulmate? If they tick the boxes above, they can certainly be that person for you. If this person offers you opportunity to grow with them, then they are your Soulmate. If you feel deeply connected by intuition – the chances are they are your Soulmate – for example, you might think the same thing at the same time even if you are countries apart. You share a vision for how you want your futures to look, and you like to challenge each other.

Soulmates are a little different from Twin Flames. They are perhaps less intense, less unstable and less irrational – there is more comfort here, yet they can still offer difficult lessons – they are just integrated a little easier, and with a touch less drama.

This Soulmate Tarot Spread is a lovely one to do to shed some light on the lessons and strengths, the Karmic lessons and the energies you each lend to your relationship, and can be done with or without your partner – we recommend with, is she or he is open to it, as it offers an opportunity to talk and connect even more deeply – and, after all, your Soulmate should be someone you would be able to share these kinds of things with without any fear!

How the Soulmate Tarot Reading Works

This eight card spread is a very easy one to learn. It grows upward, like a tree. You would begin with the card at the bottom; which is the “Foundation” card. Above that would be the Card that represents your partner, and above that is the card that represents you. Now for the leaves – just above and to the right of the card that represents you, is the card that represents the Relationship’s “Strengths”. Just above and to the left of the card that represents you is the card that shows Relationship “Weaknesses”. Above the “Strengths” card is the card that represents “Karmic Lessons” and above the “Weaknesses” card is the card that represents “Soul Lesson”. At the very top of the Tree, is a single card that represents general Advice for the Relationship as a whole.

How to Interpret the Soulmate Tarot Reading

Card Number One: Foundation of the Relationship

This card is like the roots of the tree of your relationship. It shows what anchors your relationship, what potentially keeps it grounded – it can also show if the roots are unstable or negative, in which case it becomes important to reassess what this foundation is and maybe work to change it.

Card Number Two: My Partner

This card, of course represents your Partner, hopefully your Soulmate. It shows their energy and what they bring into the realm of the relationship, for better or for worse. This card can shed a great deal of light into what they might be unconsciously projecting.

Card Number Three: Myself

This is the card that represents you, and what you bring to this relationship. It can show what you may unconsciously project, and what your energy in the relationship is as well as individually. It can show your current state of being.

Card Number Four: Relationship Strengths

This is the first ‘leaf” of the relationship “Tree” and shows the lovely strengths that your relationship has. If this card is negative, it shows that your relationship has the ability to overcome this negativity and the challenge represented by this card.

Card Number Five: Relationship Weaknesses

This is the second “leaf” of the Relationship “Tree”. It shows where the weaker areas are in your relationship, what you both have to work on to make the relationship stronger. If the card here is positive, try and read the more negative aspects of it. I.e. if you get the Star card here, it can show that your weakness together can be excessive optimism and faith and having to face reality. The more positive cards can be read like Reversals.

Card Number Six: Karmic Lesson for the Relationship

This one is powerful, being the second leaf of the tree- it goes a bit deeper than the Strengths and Weaknesses Card and shows what major Karmic Lesson is a focus for the relationship that you both have to learn together. For example, if you get a Knight of Sword, perhaps better communication and gaining knowledge is a Karmic lesson here, or perhaps you both have to learn NOT to “charge in” and override each other when communicating.

Card Number Seven: Soul Lessons for the Relationship

This card is somewhat similar to the Karmic Lesson, and can be read in conjunction with it, like a second aspect of the Karmic Lesson. It goes into the Soul of each of you and shows what needs to be learn at this level for your souls to grow and expand together.

Card Number Eight: General Advice regarding the Relationship

This card is NOT an Outcome card – it simply offers general guidance rather than a fatalistic future interpretation. This card simply shows what you and your Soulmate need to keep in mind regarding the relationship going forward and is an Advice card, like a wise sage.

Example of a Soulmate Tarot Reading

Steve is with Stacey, and they have had a tumultuous time recently as life has thrown them a great number of challenges. They have just had a baby, and Stacey has asked Steve to move out for a while as she tries to get to grips with what she really wants. They have a deep and profound connecting, that was perfect before baby came along, but they are both in a place in which they are now questioning the relationship – even though they know they are meant to be together as they love the growth they share and how they push each other to be the best version of themselves.

Card Number One: Foundation of the Relationship

The card here is the Seven of Pentacles, and shows the roots of the relationship. Pentacles is Earth, which is a great card t have in this place, as it shows that the relationship has good grounding in the material world, and the man working hard on the disks shows that both Steve and Tracey have worked very hard to make their relationship what it is over the years. Pentacles, timing wise, also represents years in the Tarot and so affirms that this relationship has been built on solid, dedicated work over the years together. We are off to a good start.

Card Number Two: My Partner

This is the card that represents Tracey and the card pulled here is the Eight of Swords. As one can see by the woman tied up and blindfolded, standing in a pool of blood, Tracey is in a very difficult place – mentally, as shown by the Swords, which always represents the intellectual realm. Tracey clearly feels trapped in her mind, and needs to step out of this difficult mental space, free herself and move away from the piercing thoughts that are worrying her. This card may indicate part partum depression.

Card Number Three: Myself

This card represents Steve, and is the Hermit Card. It is the first Major Arcana card to be pulled, and shows that Steve is experiencing a huge spiritual lesson at the moment relating to potential loneness and having to self-rely, as well as offer guidance and light to Stacey possibly. He might be the one in a stronger position than her, and though he feels alone, this can be his strength at the moment and perhaps some withdrawal is necessary for both of them.

Card Number Four: Relationship Strengths

The card pulled here is the Death card, and one can read its more negative meanings in a positive way here. Death is another Major Arcana, showing that the relationship has powerful strengths not to be overlooked. Death talks about transformation, endings, and renewal an indicates that Steve and Tracey’s relationship has the ability to withstand many difficult transitions and changes, and that they are able to face these challenges head on – they should not forget this and use their strengths at this time to embrace the new and let go of the old.

Card Number Five: Relationship Weaknesses

This card is the Ten of Cups, a generally very positive card, but in this place can indicate a more challenging dynamic or issue. It may be read similar to the reversed Ten of Cups, meaning that the relationship weakness high be that Steve and Tracey had expectations of a big happy family, but those expectations have fallen short when they have seen reality and the hard work that goes into raising children. They will have to work on trying not to project their fantasies of a happy family onto the relationship and accept that it will not always be perfect.

Card Number Six: Karmic Lesson for the Relationship

The card representing the Karmic Lesson for the Relationship is the Four of Wands. This card depicts a man and woman standing at the gates of a city, holding hands as if in celebration of a victory, and the Four represents stability and security. The Karmic lesson here therefore is about working together as a team, creating structure and security with each other as their teammate.

Card Number Seven: Soul Lessons for the Relationship

The card pulled here can be very frightening for some – it is the Devil card and shows a very important Soul Lesson to be learnt by both people in the relationship. The Devil shows a man and woman, chained loosely, naked and vulnerable, trapped and addicted. They can loosen their bonds, but they choose not to. The Soul Lesson here is for Steve and Tracey to break free of their perhaps codependent addiction to each other, to accept that lust may be lost in the birth of a child, and move beyond sheer physical desire to a place in which they can be just as connected even if they don’t have a raging physical connection. They have to perhaps learn that sex is not everything.

Card Number Eight: General Advice regarding the Relationship

The card for this is the Sun card, which is the last major Arcana for this reading an shows a lovely and positive energy to offer as guidance for going forward. The card shows a young child on a horse, with sunflowers behind him, free of control, open and victorious. This card is all about happiness and advises Steve and Tracey to just let go and enjoy their child, to try and focus on the positive strengths of their relationship and to perhaps find some time to nurture their own inner child, to have some fun and get creative.

Pros and Cons of a Soulmate Tarot Reading

  • This is a great reading to shed some light on a relationship when you are struggling or doubt the relationship, and instead of giving a fatalistic prediction, it offers guidance to make empowering choices.
  • The number of card – eight – makes it a relatively simple one to learn.
  • This reading can be just like a counselling session if you and your partner can’t afford one.
  • You have to be ready for this reading; and try not to take the reading as fatalistic.
  • It is better to do this reading when you are already with someone, rather than searching for your soulmate.
  • It might be important to first distinguish whether your current partner is actually your soulmate, or your Twin Flame, or a Karmic Relationship – reading up on these three can shed some light and help you avoid confusing these terms , but it can be a challenge to figure this out.
