Meaning of the Four of Pentacles in a Reading
When it comes to the number fours in the Tarot Cards, they represent stability and security. That hasn’t changed for some time. They can be positive in terms of consistency in life, but negative in the sense that we may get stuck.
Many fours in a tarot reading, such as a Celtic Cross Spread, can tell us that we may be a bit complacent and that change is needed. The Suit of Pentacles is the earth element which speaks to material matters such as money, business, property etc. This card, therefore, says we may be very financially secure, but the cost may be dear for that security. Our love relationships may suffer, for example, if we are unwilling to share what we have. We can block growth and become overly attached to the security we have created. Our money could be owning us, instead of the other way around.
Symbolism of the Four of Pentacles
There are Four Pentacles (also called coins) in this card. The suit of Pentacles is all about our money and what we own, and these coins represent that which we have worked hard for. The man is apparently very wealthy, with a big town behind him and expensive clothing. His expression is quite hard, and he is holding onto his coins very tightly.
The bottom two coins under his feet show his financial stability. The one he holds is in front of his heart, showing the toll that his relationships may be suffering because he has closed his heart off and may be led by money instead of love. The crowning coin on his head shows the blockage to his spiritual source.

Four of Pentacles in the Past
The Four of Pentacles in the past position of a 3-card tarot reading shows that we may have recently held on very tightly to our financial security. Also, that because we held on so tightly when change came, it could have knocked us off of our feet. We may have come from a place of fear or lack, and although we felt safe, we may have been blocked in other areas of life.
Four of Pentacles in the Present
When we get the Four of Pentacles in the present position of a 3-card tarot spread, we may be in a space of fearing for the future. Specifically, we may fear not having enough money or security. As a result, we could be working harder on our careers, but not having enough time for family, our loved ones or spiritual pursuits. We may need to move out of this “lack” mindset and not be so afraid to spend.
Four of Pentacles in the Future
This card in the future position indicates that we will soon be entering a period of relative financial security. We may, however, still feel quite insecure and unwilling to spend our hard-earned money. We may be comfortable, but there is a sense that we are holding back from the true pleasures of life out of fear. So, we may need to try and let go a little.
Reversed Four of Pentacles
The Four of Pentacles reversed can mean that we are not being as prudent as we should be with our resources. We may be experiencing greed but be unwilling to take responsibility for saving our money, which will set us back. We could be experiencing a bit of financial chaos with this card reversed.
Four of Pentacles Tarot One Card Meaning
When we get this card in a One Card Reading, you have gotten to a point in which you may be very financially comfortable – just make sure that you aren’t letting this financial stability block your spiritual or emotional growth. You may be unwilling to let go of a penny, which could be a hindrance to you as change is around the corner, so try and let go just a little.
Four of Pentacles Yes/No Meaning
When we get this card face up in the Yes or No Tarot Reading then it means “yes” to our question, and “no” if it faces down. When up, although you will be going ahead with this decision, you could encounter a situation in which you feel reluctant to part with your money. Holding on will only create more spiritual disconnection from your real goals. Learn to let go a little to find a greater sense of ease in your life. This may be a good time to save money.
When you get this card facing down, your answer is no. This is not the time of financial stability, and you may find that you have to let go of some of your resources. Try not to be too selfish or hold onto anything, as you will have to learn to let go. Try and flow with the change instead of resisting it and try not to let the fear of poverty overwhelm you.

The general sense is that we are holding onto security and fearing change. It is a sense that we may have saved and worked hard, and now have more than ever before. Yet our clinging to what we have is blocking us in the long run.
